Observation and Simulation of the Circulation , Acid - Base Balance , and Response to CO 2 in Cheyne - Stokes Respiration By RAMON

چکیده
Circulatory, chemical, and ventilatory response factors in Cheyne-Stokes respiration (CSR) were studied by experimental procedures and by mathematical analysis. Hemodynamic, ventilatory, and blood gas patterns in 16 patients with heart disease and CSR (group A) and 16 patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) without CSR (group B) were compared. CO2 and oxygen were administered to group A. The phenomena exhibited by patients with CSR were simulated by a mathematical model. The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Reduced blood flow and respiratory alkalosis were similar in both groups; (2) circulation times, lung to artery, were 29 sec greater than normal in patients with CSR but only 8 sec greater than normal in group B patients; (3) the abnormal CO2 response in CSR, a reduction in threshold and sensitivity, was similar to that in CHF, suggesting that abnormal respiratory mechanics were responsible; (4) mathematical simulation of CSR was possible by appropriate prolongation of circulation time alone; the CO2 response (reduction in threshold and sensitivity) had no significant effect on stability; (5) damping of oscillatory ventilation by CO2 inhalation could be efficiently simulated; (6) CSR with cycle periods less than 50 sec suggests increased neural or chemoreceptor excitability, anemia, or hypoxemia

متن کاملMathematical Models of Cheyne-Stokes Breathing in understanding Cardiovascular and Respiratory Disorders
The interaction between the cardiovascular system and the respiratory system is complicated and may be used for the rehabilitation of the carotid artery disease. Periodic breathing is an unusual form of breathing with oscillations in minute ventilations and with repetitive apneas or near apneas. Cheyne-Stokes like breathing during sleep may be associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in so...

Because cardiovascular disorders and stroke may induce Cheyne-Stokes respiration, our purpose was to study the interaction among cerebral activity, cerebral circulation, blood pressure, and blood gases during Cheyne-Stokes respiration. Ten patients with heart failure or a previous stroke were investigated during Cheyne-Stokes respiration with recordings of daytime polysomnography, cerebral bloo...
متن کاملThe Effect of Theophylline with Ethylenediamine
Cheyne-Stokes respiration, found associated with cardiac failure, has been attributed to cerebral anoxia (1) on the basis of decreased cerebral blood flow, which is depressed in proportion to the decrease in cardiac output (2). Since Aminophylline increases cardiac output (3) and at the same time arrests Cheyne-Stokes respiration (4), it seems logical to conclude that the latter response occurs...
متن کاملCheyne-Stokes respiration in patients with cardiac enlargement and prolonged circulation time.
A study has been made of arterial blood changes during the respiratory cycle in patients with cardiac enlargement, prolonged circulation time, and Cheyne-Stokes breathing. In these patients, Cheyne-Stokes breathing appeared to depend upon the delay in passage of blood from the lungs to the arterial chemoreceptors and respiratory center. This delayallowed cyclic over-and underventila-tion. There...
